Rain Tales & Red Tails

I told you already that NYers are no stay insides - they don't care about a lot of stuff, including the weather. And I'm not talking about people only. Apart from couples who were taking a stroll, that beautiful red tail got herself a squirrel for dinner. While I was admiring the bird I was provided with some good music - I guess the mustache had his guitar lessons, but it was pretty advanced stuff...

Fleet Week

Weapons for Mass Amusement
I came to have a look at the ships, the machines in their belly and on their shoulders - just like in a museum. But the whole thing felt completely different, because these units are still in use, and apart from the couple of yellow bobcats, they are not used for constructions... I think everybody could sense that in some way - which made it much more intriguing for me to observe all the people - not the machines...

MP3 Experiment Six

Read more at the organizers blog Improve Everywhere.
My summary: we were a lot, and it was fun. We had a nice story - inspired by peter and the wolf, good music, some exercise - stretching included, and lots of little silly games.
In the first image participants followed the security girls around, and they played along and had a lot of fun too, although they had no chance to hear what we were up to.
Second picture shows the mass - those are not even half of all the people.
Third picture - the fight against the big bad wolf.
After the fight - dead wolf walks home anyway.

Ransom Pics

113 F - 45 ºC

Guess what - yeah right, Death Valley. No shadow anywhere except in the small canyons at the rim - but even there it is not easy to find. I have to say this is the only place, where I fear my photographs can't capture the sight, there is nothing much there, there are colors, but it is mostly bright (my pictures are clearly oversaturated). It is hot - hot wind dry your sweat instantaneously.

Soo much green? Yeah, the whole valley is dry, but a view villains resist by operating a golf court on their camping ground - don't ask me how, I guess it's a huge waste of water.

That's the natural way there - the "Devil's Golf Court"

Badwater - 282 ft / - 86 m

Shoshone - if you pass through there, that is a very nice place! There was also a small museum with old rusty engines, a rusty car, and some more rusty tools.

Yay - we could never get enough, so we had a look at the hover dam right after we came back to life. Because of the bridge construction (in the back) it was hard to find a parking place. But yeah, honestly I liked the glen canyon dam more - the view was much better and less cars. But this place is still a great sight.

I came back today, and all I wanted was a little nap in the late afternoon to recharge my batteries - i woke up at 23h... This trip was really exhausting, but great. And we didn't exploit all the possibilities. You can rent a Houseboat at Lake Powell, do a lot of hiking and boat trips there, there is a nice lodge directly at the north rim of grand canyon to stay for a day or two, around Grand Canyon & Bryce Canyon are lots of Camping grounds, lots of other great parks and places are not so far away, and in Las Vegas - if you are not in for gambling - there are all the great shows - they played 3different shows by Cirque de Soleil alone - you just can't do all that in 4 days.

"It's Hell of a Place to Lose a Cow"

The next day we went first to the Coral Canyon, where you find huge dunes of red sand in the middle of a valley. We were lucky to be early - so we could enjoy the great view - does dunes are quite big and look really good with the rocks and trees around. Unfortunately it is not only a great view, but part of it is also used by offroad junkies. I really liked what they where doing on the machines, but I would have liked it more, if they just piled up sand on a parking lot and do their stuff there.

We continued to Bryce Canyon - whenever you are going to Arizona/Utah don't miss it, this place is just amazing.

The rock formation here is called "Thor's Hammer" and is part of the amphitheater.

On the planes is a little town called "Tropicana" (i think) and the guy who settled close to the canyon was E.Bryce, who built wooden roads, and had a farm. The town folks soon called the place Bryce Canyon, and the meaning of his citation "It's Hell of a Place to Lose a Cow" is pretty obvious - it's the most beautiful and unearthy Labyrinth I've ever seen!

Ahja and did I say I was lucky with wildlife? You think the Chipmunk above is awesome? No it's just cute! What you see here is not a deer but a Pronghorn and is the second fastest land animal. The wiki-article says 70km/hr, the book at the visitor center said 70mi/hr - whatever it is fast, and it waited until I got out of the car, and let me come close enough to get my shot.

Apparently our day was not long enough, so we went through Zion National Part to get back to Vegas. We stopped at a nice place - with a 1mi trail to overlook the canyon, and I whipped my comrades there to see the sunset. We only had a short moment for a couple of pictures and came back just before it went completely dark.

Colorado Cruisin

Today we left Lake Powell for Grand Canyon - visiting the "Colorado Horseshoe" on the way - after our gps-navi "mina" sent us on a desert sightseeing tour for about an hour.

We finally made it to the Grand Canyon National Park after "mina" advised us to leave the highway and cruise on dirt roads through the National Forrest for about three hours. This was actual a very nice experience until "mina" told us to turn left/right without any sign of other roads.

We arrived tired in the late afternoon - no lunch, but the view is just amazing.

There was also this nice girl, who introduced herself as A7 (I was told later, she is one of the 76 condors in grand canyon, that were set free as young birds some time ago - and none of the three rangers has been to a condor so close before).

We got even closer while the rangers were thinking how to deal with it. I was waiting for her to finally spread her wings, when she decided after two hours that she'd like to get to know me better.

As those birds are very curious, and human are their number one danger, one of the rangers finally chased her off (after taking some photographs himself, and telling us, that she has to learn human are unpredictable) - unfortunately in a direction where it was impossible to get a good shot.
But I won't complain - just call me Lord of Beasts.
